Groton School was founded in 1884 by Episcopal priest Endicott Peabody. Initially, this private school admitted only boys, and co-education was introduced in the autumn of 1975. Today, it enrols around 370 students, with equal numbers of boys and girls, 325 of whom live on campus. The school remains intimate: everyone knows each other by sight and by name. While adhering to traditional Christian values, Groton welcomes people of all faiths: Muslim, Jewish, and Buddhist services are held regularly. The teacher-student ratio is 1:5, and the average class size is 11.

The curriculum is aimed at in-depth study of subjects and preparation for admission to leading universities. In addition to required courses, students have a wide choice of electives — from robotics to art history. Each student is assigned a personal advisor from among experienced faculty, who helps with course selection, academic planning, and personal matters. In 2025, the average SAT score was 1450 and the average ACT score was 33, and graduates go on to leading universities.

Accommodation, Meals, and Pricing

The school has 17 residences, divided by age and gender. Houses for the upper and middle school accommodate 12–24 people, with rooms for 1–3 students; seniors traditionally get single rooms. Each residence has common rooms with fireplaces and small kitchens. Faculty and their families live alongside the students, taking part in daily school life. The tradition of an evening handshake, introduced by the school's founder, Endicott Peabody, is preserved. Meals are provided on a full boarding basis in a communal dining hall. 40% of students receive financial aid, and families with an income below $150,000 are exempt from tuition. Admission requires the SSAT, references, and an interview.
