Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876 in Baltimore with funds from philanthropist Johns Hopkins and became the first research university in the United States. The 140-acre Homewood campus is located in the northern part of the city. Today, it enrols around 30,000 students from more than 120 countries, of whom approximately 15–26% are international, depending on the counting method. The university is among the top ten institutions in the country: in 2025, it ranked sixth among national universities according to U.S. News & World Report and 32nd in the QS World University Rankings. Among its alumni and faculty are 29 Nobel laureates.

The university comprises nine academic divisions offering more than 260 undergraduate and graduate programmes. A particular source of pride is the medical campus with its hospital and school of nursing, as well as the Applied Physics Laboratory. The teacher-student ratio is 6:1, and the average class size is 21 students. The admissions committee selects about 6–7% of applicants, making admission one of the most competitive in the country.
