Today, it enrols more than 11,800 students, of whom about 4,500 are undergraduates. The university consistently ranks first in the world according to the QS World University Rankings and is recognised as a leading centre in artificial intelligence, robotics, and engineering. MIT's motto is "Mens et manus" ("Mind and hand"), emphasising the unity of theory and practice.
The academic programme includes more than 50 undergraduate majors across five schools and one college: Engineering, Science, Architecture and Planning, Management, Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as Computing. The teacher-student ratio is 3:1, and about 68% of classes are held in groups of up to 20 people. The admissions committee selects about 4.6% of applicants. Among its faculty and alumni are 105 Nobel laureates, 84 MacArthur Fellows, and 58 recipients of the National Medal of Science.
