Children come from all over the world to study in American schools. The vast territory and the many states located in different climatic zones with different traditions, values and standards of living make it possible to find the right school for each child.
The U.S. Secondary Education System
When a child turns 5 years old, he can attend free preparatory classes (similar to zero classes). They usually work on the basis of schools or colleges. In such groups, children are prepared to enter a specific school. In many states, a certificate is issued upon completion, certifying the completion of the course, as well as the child's abilities, academic performance and personal qualities. Such documentation is required for admission to some specialized schools.
U.S. Schools: Elementary, Middle, and High School
Depending on the state, children in the United States attend school between the ages of 5 and 8. Depending on the results of intelligence tests, they are divided into classes. Class composition is formed and changes depending on the progress of the students, choosing the appropriate method for each group. Schools can be public or private. There are also parochial schools that place great emphasis on religion.
Most American schools are divided into three levels.
-
Elementary - Grades 1-5
-
Secondary - grades 6-8
-
High school - grades 9-12
In elementary schools, emphasis is placed on core subjects such as math, literature and English, but much less time is spent on natural and social sciences. Creative subjects and sports are also mandatory. Typically, history, art history and natural science are included as mandatory subjects beginning in fifth grade, while in ninth grade at the secondary level, specialized subjects of students' own choice emerge. The choice of other subjects depends on the state and the school. Computer science, web design, statistics, journalism, foreign languages, and theater arts are in particularly high demand at this level. Elementary students are also required to take a required course that includes certain subjects (mathematics, literature, history, social sciences, physical education). Without this course, it is not possible to obtain a school certificate.
Grade 13 and preparation for school
After earning a high school diploma and passing an entrance exam at the end of grade 12, American teens are ready to rush into college or university for higher education. However, at some schools, there is an opportunity for another year of study to purposefully prepare for admission by studying the necessary subjects in depth. In addition, if you successfully pass the exam after the 13th grade, you can immediately enter the second year of a college or university. And a score can even open the door to the best universities in the U.S., such as Princeton or Harvard. In addition, certain benefits may apply for admission to educational institutions in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Israel and some other countries.
